Today is the last day of the year, and the decade…..and both seemed to fly by in hyperspeed. I know many of you feel the same way! We’re all 10 years older, and what have we accomplished? It’s been a major decade for us, no question.
What I do know is that we can all put things off, thinking they will simply happen “in due course” if we just keep them “on the list”. Sometimes that’s true, but with the really big things, it may not be the case. The really big things are truly daunting, and present the most stress…..marriage, having children, buying a home, making a move, changing jobs, re-situating parents. The closer we get to them, the greater the temptation to put on the brakes.
For instance, in our own lives, in 2018 we moved 30 minutes out of Willow Glen in San Jose to Livermore, and purchased a new home! So we covered two of the biggest stresses in one swoop :-). We spent the last year and a half of the decade getting to know our new surroundings and becoming MUCH more efficient in how we schedule clients in Silicon Valley to be sure our real estate practice continues to flourish both there and in the Tri-Valley.
In 2017, at this time, my brother and I were moving my Father to assisted living, and both flew to Vancouver, BC to help him…..it was the first time in many years that we shared a hotel room and actually had some good, in-depth conversations about life, health and happiness instead of the usual “how’s work and how are the kids?” quickie conversations. And my Father has spent the last couple years adjusting, adapting, and accepting that he no longer has the same kind of independence as before. Now there’s a few big stressors, for sure!
In 2015, Nick experienced a major health event, a triple by-pass!! He sailed through it with no complications, thank God, and is an even better version of himself now, working full-time and enjoying everything, with many more years ahead.
And in 2012, I was President of the real estate association….that was an incredibly challenging and life-changing year!!
But through it all, we were focused on friends, family, and our business. And we’ve been working full-time for 19-plus years – fast approaching 20 – in real estate, so I wanted to pass along something we’ve observed consistently the entire time.
When is the best time to purchase or sell a home? When the competition is low. And when is that time? At the holidays! And when do emotions and stress come into play more than any other time? At the holidays! :-)). And how easy is it to imagine your home filled with half-packed boxes and piles to throw away, instead of the beauty and warmth of the Christmas tree or Hanukkah menorah, pretty lights, good smells, blazing fire, beautifully set table, and lots of friends? NOT EASY. BUT…….if you’re interested in a deal…….
Typically, this past decade, interest rates have been low, and many times they’ve been really low during late November, December, and January. Inventory has been low for a few years, and always low between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. There are fewer buyers around to compete with your offer, and fewer homes for sale to distract from yours. This may all sound like “real estate spin”, but it’s actually true. Getting yourself motivated and moving to make the decision and take action is the trick. You’d be surprised at the negotiating you can do during the holidays, and really, it’s just one holiday season in a decade that doesn’t play out like the others :-). And if you time it right, you can celebrate New Year’s Eve in a brand new home and have an extra-special celebration!
We’ll bring the champagne :-)), because we’re the stress-relievers you’re looking for! If 2020 is the year, we’ll raise a cheer, and help you get in gear, never fear. We can even make it happen before Valentine’s Day if you’re ready, but if you are thinking of taking the year to prepare and plan, we’ve taken many clients through the process at the holidays without anyone getting too stressed…..we all keep our eyes on the shiny new “present” at the end of the deal :-)).
If that’s your next move, let us move you towards it as your information gatherers, resource providers, and guides…..we’ve got it covered whether you want to sell, purchase, or both. So when you look back at the end of the year, do it through the sparkling windows of a new home!! You’ll be so glad you didn’t let another year, or decade, go by without making that move!!
